What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine, or otherwise known as Naturopathy, has a long history in North America, with it’s roots in the eclectic medical traditions of Vitalism, Herbalism and Nature Cure from Europe, the Americas and beyond. It also incorporates traditional healing knowledge from Native American and First Nations healing traditions, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine.
More than a specific type of therapy (i.e. a herb or drug), Naturopathic Medicine is a system of medical diagnosis, inquiry and principles that focusses on treating all aspects of an individual, including physical, mental, social and spiritual — for truly individualised healthcare.
Medically trained, Naturally focussed.™
In British Columbia, Naturopathic Doctors (also referred to as NDs or Naturopathic Physicians) are licensed under the Health Professions Act as primary healthcare providers, and have one of the largest scopes of practice in North America. Licensing has set BC NDs apart from unlicensed “Naturopaths” who have do not have a 4 year medical degree.
As primary healthcare providers, NDs can diagnose and treat a wide variety of health conditions, perform physical exams, do blood testing, and more. Naturopaths are particularly good at treating chronic conditions when the regular medical system has failed, because they are not restricted to using pharmaceutical drugs and can take more time with patient to find out the true cause of illness.
