What is it?
Botox® and Xeomin Cosmetic are neuromodulators that relax the muscles. A neuromodulator is a purified, natural protein (Botulinum Toxin Type A) that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles, creating a smoothed and improved appearance. It is a novel therapeutic protein derived from the Bacterium Clostridium botulinum allowing to block the message from the nerve to the muscle which results in muscle relaxation to create a smoother, relaxed look.
What causes wrinkles and why Botox®/Xeomin Cosmetic works
Wrinkles are caused by repetitive hyperactivity of muscles contracting (such as constantly frowning, for example). Botox® and Xeomin treat the cause by stopping this muscle hyperactivity. Botox®/Xeomin blocks the impulses from the nerve to the muscle. By injecting extremely small amounts of neuromodulator into a specific muscle, we can safely relax the muscle so it does not contract. The overlying skin lines will gradually soften and smoothen out.
Untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expressions to be unaffected.
The most common wrinkles that are treated with neuromodulator are frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, and crows’ feet around the eyes. Botox® is the number 1 non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the world, as it is the best non-surgical treatment to prevent and reduce wrinkles.
How long for it to work and how long does it last?
- Maximum effect of neuromodulators could be seen at 3 days, but usually occurs at day 10-14.
- Results of a neuromodulator treatment may persist for up to 4 months, after which re-treatment is recommended.
- Results may last longer with repeated injections. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear and need to be treated again. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because of the muscles decreased activity.
The Botox®/Xeomin Cosmetic treatment: what to expect
Neuromodulator injection treatment is a simple and safe procedure taking only a few minutes in the office.
Using a tiny needle, a small amount of Botox®/Xeomin is injected very precisely into several locations of the face for the desired results.
The neuromodulator takes effect in 3-7 days, while maximum results are achieved in 10-14 days.
Gradually over 3-4 months the results will wear off, and the lines will begin to reappear. A simple treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired result.
The treatment is often referred to as the “lunchtime procedure” because it is quick and there is little to no downtime. You can expect to feel a very slight sting during the injection, which dissipates shortly after.
